Kristen Stewart to Lead Jury at Biarritz Youth Film Festival

Festival focuses on youth driven cinema and receives major support from luxury brand Chanel

Kristen Stewart is stepping into a prominent leadership role on the international film stage, as she prepares to head the competition jury at the fourth edition of the Biarritz Nouvelles Vagues Festival in southwestern France. Known for its distinctive focus on youth-centered storytelling, the festival continues to position itself as a platform for bold, emerging voices and narratives that capture the complexity and energy of younger generations.

Stewart’s appointment reflects both her growing influence behind the camera and her longstanding reputation as an artist unafraid to take creative risks. After making her directorial debut with The Chronology of Water last year, she has increasingly expanded her presence beyond acting, embracing storytelling from a new perspective. Her leadership at Biarritz signals a natural progression in her career, aligning her artistic sensibilities with a festival dedicated to innovation and transformation.

The jury she will lead will consist of eight internationally recognized talents, bringing together a diverse range of creative voices. Stewart is no stranger to such responsibilities. She previously presided over the jury at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2023 and was also a jury member at Cannes in 2018, reinforcing her credibility within the global film community.

Founded by Jérôme Pulis and supported by the French luxury house Chanel, the Biarritz Nouvelles Vagues Festival has carved out a unique identity. It is not just a celebration of cinema but an exploration of youth as a dynamic and evolving force. The festival highlights youth as a time of creativity, questioning, and reinvention in dialogue with contemporary issues.

Organizers have emphasized that Stewart embodies this spirit. Her career choices reflect independence, bold experimentation, and artistic freedom, qualities that align seamlessly with the festival’s vision. Through her work, she continues to challenge conventions and explore new storytelling forms.

In addition to presiding over the jury, Stewart will also present her directorial debut during the festival and participate in a masterclass. This will give audiences a closer look at her creative process and the evolution of her artistic journey. The film, produced by CG Cinema, premiered at Cannes and has since been featured at multiple international festivals.

The festival continues to grow in stature, attracting major figures from the film industry. Gregory Caulier, known for his role with the Cesar Awards, recently joined as head of film and is working with a selection committee to curate this year’s lineup, which will be announced in late May.

Previous editions of the festival have hosted acclaimed filmmakers such as Sofia Coppola and Richard Linklater, further establishing its reputation as a hub for visionary cinema. With Kristen Stewart now at the helm of the jury, the upcoming edition is set to further strengthen its position as a platform for bold, youth-driven storytelling.
