Jane Fonda-Starring ‘The Correspondent’ Movie Adaptation Lands at Lionsgate

Lionsgate secures film rights after a competitive bidding war, with Jane Fonda set to star and produce the adaptation of Virginia Evans’ bestselling novel

In a major cinematic acquisition that has stirred excitement across both literary and film circles, Lionsgate has officially secured the rights to adapt “The Correspondent,” the acclaimed debut novel by Virginia Evans. The project, which attracted intense interest from multiple studios, ultimately found its home at Lionsgate following a competitive seven-studio bidding war. At the heart of this highly anticipated adaptation is two-time Academy Award winner Jane Fonda, who will not only take on the lead role but also serve as a producer, bringing both star power and creative influence to the film.

“The Correspondent” centers on the compelling and emotionally layered character of Sybil Van Antwerp, a retired lawyer whose life is shaped by her habit of writing letters. Sharp, articulate, and unapologetically opinionated, Sybil has long relied on written correspondence to bring order and clarity to the complexities of her world. She writes to friends, family, and even literary figures, crafting a life through words—yet one letter remains unwritten, addressed to a mysterious recipient tied to her past.

The story takes a poignant turn when an unexpected letter resurfaces, forcing Sybil to confront a deeply buried chapter of her life. What unfolds is a powerful exploration of grief, regret, and unresolved guilt, as the past collides with the present in a way that challenges her carefully constructed emotional boundaries. The narrative’s emotional depth and introspective tone are expected to translate beautifully to the screen, especially with an actor of Fonda’s caliber at its center.

Virginia Evans’ novel has already proven to be a literary phenomenon. Published just last spring, it has sold over one million copies and remained on the New York Times best-sellers list for an impressive 17 weeks. Its success lies not only in its compelling storyline but also in its universal themes of loss, reconciliation, and the enduring power of communication. The book has resonated with readers worldwide, making it a natural candidate for a feature film adaptation.

Joining Fonda on the production side is Todd Lieberman of Hidden Pictures, known for his work on successful adaptations such as “The Housemaid” and “War Machine.” The screenplay will be adapted by Cat Vasko, an emerging voice in the industry recognized for her nuanced storytelling and upcoming projects like “Jour J (Unbridaled)” and “Zero Stars: Do Not Recommend.” Vasko will also serve as an executive producer alongside Evans, ensuring that the essence of the original novel remains intact while being thoughtfully reimagined for the screen.

Lionsgate Motion Picture Group president Erin Westerman expressed strong enthusiasm for the project, emphasizing the emotional resonance of the story and the studio’s commitment to bringing it to life with authenticity and care. According to Westerman, the novel deeply moved members of the team, and the collaboration between Fonda, Evans, and Vasko reflects a shared passion for storytelling that is both intimate and impactful.

The project will be overseen by Chelsea Kujawa and Pavan Kalidindi for Lionsgate, while Carly Kleinbart Elter and Aydan Cohen will represent Hidden Pictures. Industry veteran Dan Freedman negotiated the deal on behalf of the studio, ensuring a smooth acquisition process amid fierce competition.

Producer Todd Lieberman described the novel as a “phenomenon,” highlighting the emotional catharsis it has provided to readers. He expressed excitement about translating that same experience to audiences on the big screen, particularly with a creative team led by someone as iconic as Jane Fonda. The collaboration, he noted, represents a unique opportunity to blend literary depth with cinematic storytelling.

As anticipation builds, “The Correspondent” stands poised to become a standout adaptation, combining a powerful narrative with a stellar creative team. With production expected to move forward soon, audiences can look forward to a film that not only honors its source material but also brings new emotional dimensions to an already beloved story.
